Our Story

Subira — Swahili for patience

The Beginning

Maison Subira was built on a single belief:
that the most beautiful things cannot be rushed.

Subira is the Swahili word for patience. It is the feeling in a piece of work that took real time to make — not days on a machine, but hours in the hands of a person who learned this craft and chose to give it to someone else.

Maison Subira was founded in Kigali, Rwanda — a city that has spent decades building something extraordinary. We are proud to be part of that story.

The Artisans

Every Maison Subira piece is made by hand in Kigali, Rwanda, by women artisans who have spent years developing their craft. We work with skilled makers who are paid fairly for their time — because the hours it takes to build something by hand are the entire point.

When you hold a Maison Subira piece, you are holding the work of a specific person. That person's name will be on your hangtag. This is not charity. It is commerce done with intention.

What We Make

Maison Subira creates handmade crochet pieces for women who buy with intention — resortwear, cardigans, co-ord sets, bags, and accessories designed to be worn and kept, not discarded.

Every piece is made to order. We do not hold large stock. We do not rush production. We believe that a piece made in four weeks is better than a piece made in four days.

"Handmade in Rwanda. Inspired by African artistry."

Designed for women who value what took time to make.

01
Craft Integrity

Every piece is made by hand, by a named artisan, using real skill. Each piece takes between 8 and 45 hours to complete.

02
Fair Wages

Our artisans are paid above the local market rate. We keep records and can share them with buyers who ask.

03
Honest Origin

We say "Made in Rwanda" because it is. We are specific about where our pieces are made, who made them, and what material was used.
